When creating a character, where should I start?
We highly suggest beginning by choosing a location and then build the character around that location. Its hard to squeeze pre-exisiting character ideas into a set location when there is so much history to consider. You can choose abilities first, or even have an idea of personality first, but try to be sure that every idea links to the location and makes sense. That's why its easier to start by choosing the location and then tailoring everything to that location.
Are there any rules for character abilities?
Yes, but only a few.
1. Every ability has flaws. This means that you can’t overlook the natural flaws of an ability without a realistic solution. For example, Alfred’s super strength made it damn near impossible for him to handle everyday objects without breaking them.
2. The description you give us decides your power level. This will change if we see the character behaving with their ability as if it should be higher or lower.
3. Control is limited to what we grant to a character. Assume you have little-to-no control to start. Activity and use of an ability leads to power upgrades when we decide to grant them.
What character types can I play?
Under the registration board the accepted board can be found. The Accepted board includes sub boards for each character type available. Please check out our location claim to see who is claimed. If the name isn't bold or the location isn't on the list, the character is available. If you are not sure if a character location is allowed, just PM an admin. We are happy to answer questions.
Who can I use as a play-by?
We are not restricting play-bys too much. First, it has to be an animated character. No real celebrities are allowed. Second, if it is already taken please don’t use the play-by. As for Hetalia cannons, naturally they are off limits, the only exception being if someone has gender bended the character and left the cannon play-by open. Keep in mind, even then, if you were to use say Ivan, be sure to make him Russian.
I see everyone on the site has matching icons. How do I get one?
I am glad you asked. I, Pancake, made some icons for the staff section of the skin and thought they helped unify the site. Now, I am making them for everyone. Once your character has been accepted (and I have a moment to create it) you can find your icon in the character resource board or by clicking this link. These are for free use by all members. Please remember to credit me (and link to Memories Remain) if you choose to use these icons off site.
Who are the Fawkes Initiative? What country are they from?
The Fawkes Initiative is a very mysterious group. No one knows where they are situated. It is unclear what the group wants, but it is very clear they intend to make everyone's lives hell. The Initiative is not from any one country, and instead is scattered across the world. They have been built up to be quite powerful by now and have agents everywhere infiltrating many governments. In phase 1, they stranded many nations, capitals etc on an Island called Fawkes Island. In phase 2 they started bombing select places... Everything has been escalating from there.
What is a Hetalian?
A Hetalian is a spirit of the land. They are a personification of a land mass, waterbody, city, country, etc. The term Hetalian comes from ‘Hetalia’ the anime that this site idea is based on. The term itself is an out of character term. It is not used by the characters themselves to describe the condition. In fact, most call themselves a variety of different names; spirits, location spirits, nations, capitals, etc.
Hetalians have a distinct connection to the location they come from. Their history and experiences should mirror those of the location. They have a connection with their people/population as well. If a person is personified for a place with a population, the people are just as important as the land is. If the land is gone, as long as the people survive the Hetalian can survive. Likewise if the people suffer famine, genocide, plague, or don’t have a population but a section of their homeland/water is destroyed they suffer accordingly. These are often personified as the Hetalian getting sick, taking injury or even having lasting visual changes/scars. This is up to interpretation, but think deeply about why your character looks or acts a certain way based on this connection.
Now please keep in mind, we are a loose base so you are not required to know the anime to join. We just ask that when you decide to make a nation that you check to see if it is cannon so you can take inspiration, ideas or even make that character as the cannon. It’s better to go into things informed and it helps to understand how Hetalia works. If you have any questions about this, please let the staff know. We would love to answer your questions.
Do Humans know about Hetalians?
Yes and No. It is up to you to decide what your characters and the people around them know about Hetalians. Historically everyone was aware of the Hetalians and what they represented. They were a rallying point for their people and a valued treasure. Over time enemy armies would target the Hetalians and as such over time the knowledge began to be hushed and the Hetalian of a country kept secret. As knowledge was stifled, many stopped believing in such things. They passed into legend, then myth and were eventually forgotten about altogether. Although, in some cultures the beliefs of the past may include vague references to the Hetalians with some being referred to as gods, kings or even magical beings of old.
Current humanity doesn’t generally believe in such things. It can be difficult to convince them. However, governments and people of import to a location/country would be aware of their respective nation/capital, etc. The secret comes out when you reach high enough clearance of information. That being said, all new human characters should have to find out about it, unless you wish to have a history that includes the character knowing. Please speak to an admin if you have ideas regarding this.
What happens when a Hetalian dies?
Hetalians are bound to the land/location they are from. That means that if they die, unless that country/place is dead they will come back to life. Different people view this process differently, but on MR it is a painful process of ‘regenerating’ back to life. This is often a private event and references to it are vague. As a result the way it happens can be up to your imagination, just keep in mind it is painful, no one witnesses it and your character shouldn’t be so open as to talk about it. Keep in mind if a Hetalian’s body is not destroyed completely they will simply regenerate with that original body. This process is less painful but still has pain involved.
Do Hetalians heal quicker than humans?
Once again it’s a Yes and No answer. Hetalians heal quicker than humans with regard to physical injury inflicted on them. However, injury that comes from land or people they belong to being harmed can last much longer. For example; you can bet the nuke dropped on Hiroshima took a long time for Japan to heal from…longer than just your standard burns. Just be reasonable and logical about it. A paper cut on a Hetalian could be gone in minutes….but a broken arm may take them a few days to heal. Something more vicious could take longer…we trust everyone to judge this appropriately.
How do Hetalians grow and can Hetalians reproduce?
Hetalians just cropped up into being when their respective country, landmass, or water mass formed. This means they have no biological parents. Now that being said there are relationships that mirror family relations. Some may see the ancient empire that once held that territory as a parent despite the section breaking off resulting in the new Hetalian. For example, England may view Britannia as a parent nation. There is no biology involved however. It is also possible to view other nations as siblings because of similar geography or history; example, both being a colony of the British Empire once or both being commonwealth. These are relationships that need to be plotted out with those it applies to.
When it comes to aging, Hetalians age very slowly. New nations would appear as very young children. The age varies depending experiences as well as age of creation. For example: The Republic of Ireland is fairly new, but Ireland has existed for a long time. She is an adult, aged to and remaining in her 20s, despite a fairly recently formed new government/nation. At the same time, Alfred (USA) appears the same age as say Arthur (England) in many ways, yet they are very different in terms of actual lifespan. Its up to interpretation. However, there is no excuse for a western civilization being over 30 visually and in fact, even the ancients have very few reasons to appear that old. Older nations at the same time should not appear as teenagers. They should be wise and therefore appear that way as well. Think in a range of child to young adult for your face claims.
As for reproduction, no Hetalians cannot reproduce. Not with humans, not with other hetalians. They are infertile. They will never have children of their own and none of them have ever had true birthing parents either.
Can Hetalians run a country on their own? Do they really need a president, prime minister, etc? What is their relationship to these people?
No! Hetalians cannot run their own country. There is a huge conflict of interest there and it would cause no end of problems. Humans must be in charge of any given location, and the Hetalian will view those government authorities as their 'boss'. When a government decides to make changes, this is often reflected in the Hetalian. Their relationship is quite complicated however. Just because a decision is made doesn't always mean the Hetalian agrees. However, the Hetalian is bound to the government and must act according to its wishes. For example: Germany may not have agreed with the holocaust and the horrors of WWII, but he/she certainly had to act on the governmental decisions made by Hitler. How this is personified is up to the individual, but being torn and often mentally unstable during times like this is understandable. Hence, relations with the government can often be very complicated for a hetalian.
If they have a cannon ability do they keep it, do I have to make it their ability or can I do something else?
If you are playing the cannon version of a character then they keep the cannon ability separate of their announced ability. If you wish to make that cannon ability stronger, it can be added as their respective ability. Also keep in mind, if the cannon has a pre-existing ability it is likely their ability will mirror that existing ability. For example, it doesn’t make sense for Alfred to have a mental ability when his cannon one is purely physical. The new ability should relate in some way to that first ability or at least to the character’s history/culture.
Can I gender bend my cannon character?
Yes! Why not!? We are not fussing over cannons as long as some of the major things remain consistent. If you are concerned about your gender-bending idea please message a staff member and we will try to answer your questions. We also allow OCs in place of cannons, but the idea must be exceptional. Again, PM an admin about it.
Are countries and capitals required to live together? Can countries live with other countries?
No one is required to live with anyone. Anyone can also live with anyone. Just make sure all parties involved are good with the situation. Please note EVERY CHARACTER MUST HAVE A HOUSE!! This means if you go too long before posting in the house request board, we will brainstorm the ugliest house we can think of, plop it as a description for your house and stick it in the residential board. It will likely be something your character will hate. It will remain there until you post in the House Request board. You may also get a roommate with an existing house to post there to say your character is joining them at their house.
